Ask Your Doctor

How can I ensure that DERMABOND®
is considered as an option for me?

By being prepared to discuss the option of using DERMABOND® in an emergency situation, you can help ensure that the treatment given is as comfortable and effective as possible. By knowing when and how to ask the right questions, you can remind the ER nurse or doctor that stitches can be traumatic or painful for you or your child, and that you are aware of other options.

Ask if DERMABOND® is right for you.

For Example

"I've heard of a skin adhesive called DERMABOND® that can be used instead of stitches to close cuts. Do you use it at this hospital?"

Following the cleansing and evaluation of your wound, your doctor will discuss the treatment process. This is also a good time to ask if DERMABOND® is an option.

For Example

"Doctor, I've heard of this skin adhesive called DERMABOND® that can be used instead of stitches to close wounds. Can it be used to treat my wound?"

Remember, DERMABOND® is only appropriate for certain kinds of wounds, and only your doctor will know when DERMABOND® is the right choice.

Many factors can influence your doctor's decision on whether to use DERMABOND®. But by asking, you can ensure that it is considered as a treatment alternative in the busy Emergency Room environment.

Asking Your Surgeon for DERMABOND®

When you meet with your doctor or surgeon to discuss your procedure, it is an ideal time to ask about the choices available for closing your incision.

Now that you know about DERMABOND®, you are better prepared to talk about it. Here are some suggested ways to ask for DERMABOND.®

  • "Doctor, have you ever used DERMABOND®?"
  • "Doctor, I understand that this surgery will require both external stitches to close my skin, and internal stitches to close the muscle and tissue beneath my skin. Can DERMABOND® be used on my skin instead of external stitches?"
  • "Doctor, I've heard that DERMABOND® can be more comfortable than stitches after my surgery. What do you think?"
  • "Doctor, can DERMABOND® make my recovery any easier? Will it help me return to my normal routine more quickly? Does it mean I won't have to return to have stitches removed, and won't have to deal with changing bandages?"
  • "Doctor, I'd really like to be able to take a shower after my surgery. I heard that DERMABOND® can let me do that."

Remember, DERMABOND® is only appropriate for certain types of incisions, and only your doctor will know when DERMABOND® is the right choice for you.

Many factors can influence your doctor's decision on whether to use DERMABOND®. By asking, you can make sure that it is considered for your operation.

Remember, for many routine surgical procedures, you do have a choice... DERMABOND®.
