Safe Kids

Safe Kids Worldwide® and DERMABOND ADVANCED™
Unintentional injury remains the leading cause of death among children ages 1-14. Safe Kids Worldwide® is an international nonprofit organization dedicated solely to preventing unintentional childhood injury. Together, we're providing kids and parents with important safety tips that can help prevent serious injuries.

Safe Kids Worldwide®, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Washington, DC, was launched in 1988 as the National SAFE KIDS Campaign with support from Johnson & Johnson. Safe Kids Worldwide® now has 450 coalitions in 16 countries, bringing together health and safety experts, educators, corporations, foundations, governments, and volunteers to educate and protect families1.

Dr. Ike
"I'm a surgeon and I've been working with children for 30 years. I spent many years putting together the best trauma center for kids in the world, with the greatest capacity and the quickest response. But I realized that the medicine didn't matter—children were still dying. A lasting solution couldn't come from the hospital; it had to come from the community. We needed to change the paradigm from treatment to prevention. For instance, traffic-related fatalities are the number one cause of death in children, and most of those are easily preventable. That's why I started Safe Kids, and why Johnson & Johnson
became our founding sponsor."

Play Safe

  • Actively supervise children when they play on a playground. Make sure the playground surface is covered 12 inches deep with shredded rubber, hardwood fiber mulch, or fine sand, extending at least 6 feet in all directions around the equipment*
  • Wear the right protective gear, properly fitted, when practicing and playing team sports
  • Don't allow children to play on balconies, roofs, stairs, or furniture, or in driveways, streets, or parking lots
  • For swings and slides, even more coverage may be needed; follow the recommendations of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's Handbook for Public Playground Safety

Wheel Safe

  • Make sure children always wear helmets and other protective gear every time they bike, skate, skateboard, or ride a scooter
  • Make sure children know the rules of the road and obey all traffic laws

Walk Safe

  • Have children cross the street with an adult until they are 10 years old
  • Teach children to cross streets at corners and look left, right, and left again before crossing
  • Have children wear reflective materials and carry a flashlight when it's dark outside, including at dawn and dusk

Swim Safe

  • Always keep your eyes on your children near water, including all types of pools, hot tubs, and open bodies of water
  • Make sure the children wear the appropriate size and type of life jacket when out on boats or in/near open bodies of water

Ride Safe

  • Make sure children ages 12 and under are properly restrained in a back seat on every ride in every vehicle they ride in
o Infants should ride in rear-facing car seats as long as possible and until they are at least 12 months old and weigh at least 20 pounds
o Children that are at least 12 months old and weigh between 20 and 40 pounds should be correctly secured in a forward-facing car seat with a harness
o Children over 40 pounds should be correctly secured in a belt-positioning booster seat until adult lap and shoulder belts fit correctly
